A young couple sought to add a pool to their property for their kids. The young father, a pilot and instructor for the USAF, has a background in engineering. Supportive of pursuing a non-rectilinear form, we designed the pool in the shape of an airfoil. The pool elements, including the bench, infinity edge, were all influenced by the language of the airfoil, and all were reconsidered as sweeping shapes. The reveal of the catch-basin complements the airfoil shape in plan with a sweeping curve in elevation.
One of the challenges of this project was to match a contemporary pool design with an aging existing house. A color pallet was selected for the pool, paving and trellis that provide a unified design, aiding in smoothing out the differences between the pool and the existing house.
